Odoo 20: New Features, AI Automation, and What Businesses Need to Know

For a long time, ERP meant people typing data into screens. With the Odoo 20 release, the software starts doing some of that work itself: creating records, sending confirmations, and flagging things for a human to check.

That's a real shift in business process automation, and it's the reason Odoo 20 automation is worth understanding even if you never touch an AI agent.

Below, we go through the Odoo 20 New Features across AI, CRM, sales, accounting, inventory, manufacturing, website, POS, field service and HR, then look at what an upgrade involves.

We're GSUS, an Odoo Silver Partner, so we read this release asking one question: what will businesses actually have to plan for? Feature details follow Odoo's published release notes, and we've left out claims we couldn't trace back to Odoo.

What Is Odoo 20, and What Makes This ERP Release Different?

Odoo 20 is the newest major version of Odoo's business management software, following Odoo 19 from 2025.

The theme is consistent: simplify processes, let AI handle routine work, and tie the apps closer together. Taken as a group, the Odoo 20 new features are less about flashy screens and more about removing steps.

You can see it in small choices. Field Service now lives inside Planning. Vendor bills can be paid from Odoo instead of being exported to a bank portal.

Every disconnected step, like exporting a file or re-keying an order, is where mistakes sneak in, and this Odoo 20 ERP release goes after a lot of them.

Odoo 20 AI Features: From Assistance to Business Process Automation

Odoo 20 AI Agents for Automated Workflows

In Odoo 19, AI mostly answered questions and summarized things. In Odoo 20, AI agents can create and update records, and they can run inside automated and scheduled actions.

Odoo's own demo shows the idea. An order arrives by email. One instruction later, the agent creates the sales order, sends the customer a confirmation and flags it for review, after first explaining what it's about to do.

You can also describe a process in plain language, like assigning leads or creating a project once a contract is signed and letting the agent build the automation. That's the practical core of Odoo 20 AI Automation.

One catch to know early: according to the release notes, all AI features now run on credits bought as in-app purchases. Start with one or two processes and watch the usage.

Odoo 20 MCP Server: Connecting Your Data with External AI Tools

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for outside AI tools to talk to another system. In Odoo 20 you can connect an external AI tool to your database, and Odoo says it works within the user's existing access rights, so the tool shouldn't see or change more than that person could.

Why care? Your team can keep using the AI tool they already like without copying data around. Still, treat it like any new integration and test with a limited-access user first.

Voice and Conversational AI

The agent also accepts voice input and asks for permissions through clickable answers. Small thing, but it makes an AI-powered ERP feel less like a chatbot bolted on the side.

One honest note: an agent automates whatever you tell it to, good process or bad. Get the process right first.

Odoo 20 CRM and Sales Features

Sales gets practical polish. Lead generation from the Dun and Bradstreet database can be filtered by segment and location, and a pipeline switcher moves you between sales teams.

For quotation management, you can save groups of lines as reusable section templates, edit margins right on order lines, add product images and toggle prices with or without tax.

Pricing is more flexible too: periodic prices, rules per packaging type and single-use discount codes. Commissions can be based on the amount actually paid, which finance teams will appreciate.

Odoo 20 Accounting Features: AI and Financial Automation

There's an accounting AI agent you can ask about receivables, gross profit or cash flow, and it answers your reports.

The other big one is paying vendor bills directly from Odoo, individually or in bulk. Availability depends on your bank and country, so check your account.

Around that sit bill line prediction from past bills, duplicate detection and protection against double payments.

For multi-company groups, when a subsidiary invoices and the parent receives the payment, Odoo reconciles it automatically.

Two changes will affect habits. Every journal entry touching a bank account must now come from a bank transaction, and the separate Employee Expenses menu is gone, folded into the accounting flows.

Odoo 20 Inventory and Supply Chain Features

Suggested reordering rules offer minimum and maximum stock levels from demand history, the days of coverage you want and order frequency.

There's also a vendor quality rating built from past orders, and an allocation report showing which customer orders are waiting on incoming stock.

Stockouts often come from guesswork, like a min/max set two years ago and never touched. Suggestions replace some of that, and the allocation report helps you decide who gets stock first.

For Inventory Management you also get inventory at a past date, stock aging, landed costs per product, and a prefilled CMR document for road freight.

Odoo 20 Manufacturing and MRP Features

For manufacturers, this is where the Odoo 20 new features matter most. Continuous production lets operators register quantities directly on work orders, and the next blocked operation is released without closing the whole manufacturing order.

On a busy shop floor, that means less waiting and less paperwork. You also get bill of materials (BOM) comparison, and a Kanban planning view for work centers next to a Gantt view with buffers, both useful for production planning.

Since costing lives in the same system, retroactive COGS updates when a cost changes after delivery keep the numbers honest.

Odoo 20 New Features for Website, POS, Field Service and HR

The AI Website Assistant builds pages from a description and can rewrite copy, translate and suggest SEO titles. Odoo 20 also adds an llms.txt setting, default structured data and cleaner sitemaps.

The shop gets returns from the portal, preferred delivery dates and free-shipping progress bars, and marketing automation campaigns can be built from scratch, from a template or by asking AI.

POS gains a dashboard, a redesigned floor plan editor, snoozing for sold-out products and multi-currency checkout. Offline mode lets people view, create, and edit records without a connection. Field Service inside Planning adds travel time and a live crew map.

On the HR side, payroll gets net-to-gross simulation, test pay runs, and salary indexation. One warning: work entries and the Planning-to-Payroll integration were removed, so check whether your payroll relies on them.

Is Odoo 20 a Major Upgrade from Odoo 19?

It depends, and we'd be wary of anyone giving up a blanket. What matters is your current version, custom modules, integrations, processes, database complexity and whether you need specific Odoo 20 new features, like agents or continuous production.

A lightly customized setup will move more easily than a heavily customized one.

What Odoo 20 Means for Different Businesses

Manufacturers get the most from continuous production, BOM comparison, and smarter reordering. Trading and distribution companies will lean on suggested reordering, vendor rating and the allocation report.

Retail and eCommerce teams get POS offline mode, portal returns and simplified stock management for shops that don't need the full Inventory app. multi-company groups benefit from the intercompany reconciliation, which cuts down manual matching between entities.

If you're not sure which of these Odoo 20 Features apply to you, that's a good question to settle before planning anything.

How to Prepare Your Business for Odoo 20

A new major version is a good moment to clean up, not just switch. Before any Odoo 20 upgrade or Odoo 20 Migration:

  • List your customizations and third-party modules.
  • Check your API integrations.
  • Clean and validate your data.
  • Test a staging copy of your database.
  • Run real accounting, inventory, manufacturing, and sales workflows with key users.
  • Train people before go-live.

Odoo 20 Upgrade and Migration: What to Check Before Moving

Some specifics from the 20.0 release: self-hosted setups need Python 3.12 to 3.14 and PostgreSQL 16 or newer.

Localization changes are listed country by country, so test your e-invoicing, tax reports and bank formats. Review payroll and expenses because of the removals above and budget for AI credits.

Moving to Odoo 20 isn't only a technical version of change. Your business processes, customizations, and integrations need a review first. It's how we approach every Odoo Implementation at GSUS. Understand the process, then configure the ERP.
